IN BREVE.

Nel 206 a.C.: «Ludi plebeii instaurati…» [4]
E nel 199 a.C.: «Ludi plebeii instaurati et epulum Iovis fuit ludorum causa.» [5]

In tutti e tre i casi, Tito Livio impiega la stessa formula: ludi plebeii instaurati et epulum Iovis fuit ludorum causa.

IN BRIEF. A festival of the Roman people, the Ludi Plebeii (4–17 November) honoured Jupiter in the Circus Flaminius. Born of a civic demand, they became a state institution. Livy, Plautus and Valerius Maximus reveal their religious, political and theatrical significance: plebeian freedom celebrated under the gaze of the gods.

Ludi Plebeii: when the Roman plebs celebrated

Each year, from 4 to 17 November, Rome came alive with music, theatre, and processions: it was the time of the Ludi Plebeii, the Plebeian Games. Less famous than the Ludi Romani held in September, but established very early in the civic calendar, these games were the great popular festival of autumn. The plebs celebrated Jupiter Capitolinus, their tutelary god, in a circus they regarded as their own: the Circus Flaminius.

In Republican Rome, public games were never mere entertainment: they expressed the balance of powers and the hierarchy of social orders. The Ludi Plebeii were one of their symbols — a festival of the people, for the people, but recognised by the State.

A people’s festival, mirror of the Ludi Romani

The Ludi Plebeii were organised by the plebeian aediles, magistrates elected from among the common people. They formed the direct counterpart to the Ludi Romani, which were presided over by the curule aediles from the nobility. This institutional duality embodied the balance between the two orders: patricians and plebeians.

According to the Fasti Praenestini [1], the festival lasted fourteen days, from 4 to 17 November, reaching its climax on the 13th — the Ides of November — the day of the banquet of Jupiter Capitolinus (Epulum Iovis). This sacred meal, celebrated by the plebs, echoed the one offered by the patricians in September during the Ludi Romani. In November, the plebs honoured Jupiter not on the Capitoline Hill but on the Campus Martius, a space of their own and a symbol of their civic identity.

Political origins

The origins of these games go back to the early days of the Republic. A later tradition, transmitted by Pseudo-Asconius (a medieval commentary attached to Cicero), claims they were instituted after the expulsion of the kings, in honour of liberty, or to mark the reconciliation of the plebs after their secession to the Aventine [2]. Although this explanation is not an ancient testimony, it fits the political meaning of the festival: the Ludi Plebeii symbolised the plebs’ conquest of civic freedom and their integration into Rome’s public cults.

The Circus Flaminius, a people’s circus

The venue of the games was not the prestigious Circus Maximus, reserved for aristocratic triumphs, but the Circus Flaminius, built in 220 BC by the censor Gaius Flaminius, a tribune of the plebs and a bold reformer. This space on the Campus Martius, open to assemblies and triumphs, soon became the setting for plebeian ceremonies. The very name of the circus, that of a tribune of the plebs, made it a symbol of political liberty.

Some scholars note, however, that the Circus Flaminius was not a racetrack in the strict sense: it had neither spina nor carceres. Built before the great permanent circuses, it served rather as an open esplanade for processions, assemblies, and triumphs. The chariot races of the Ludi Plebeii were probably held further north on the Campus Martius, in a temporarily arranged space.

Testimonies of Livy and Valerius Maximus

The historian Livy mentions the Ludi Plebeii several times in the 3rd century BC:

In 206 BC: Ludi plebeii instaurati… [4]
And in 199 BC: Ludi plebeii instaurati et epulum Iovis fuit ludorum causa. [5]

In each case, Livy uses the same formula: ludi plebeii instaurati et epulum Iovis fuit ludorum causa. The verb instaurare –“to resume,” “to repeat”– is a religious term: it meant that the festival had to be repeated in the event of a ritual fault (vitium). This instauratio ludorum lies at the heart of Valerius Maximus’s account.

He tells of a striking episode that occurred precisely “during the Plebeian Games, through the Circus Flaminius” [6]. A plebeian citizen, Titus Latinius, received in a dream Jupiter’s order to warn the consuls: the god had not been satisfied with the dancer in the latest pompa circensis and demanded that the games be performed again with due care. Fearing to meddle in the State’s religious affairs, Latinius kept silent. His son died immediately afterwards, and he himself was struck by paralysis. When at last he decided to speak before the Senate, he recovered the use of his limbs in full view of all.

This story shows the place of the Ludi Plebeii within public religion: Jupiter’s message reached Rome through a man of the people, and the ritual fault led to a repetition of the games — exactly as Livy described. It is also the earliest explicit testimony linking the Ludi Plebeii to the Circus Flaminius.

Theatre at the Ludi Plebeii

Like the Ludi Romani, the Plebeian Games included dramatic performances (ludi scaenici). It was during these games, in 200 BC, that the first performance of Plautus’s Stichus took place, “acta ludis plebeis, Cn. Baebio, C. Terentio aedilibus plebeiis…” [7]. This rare didascalia makes the Ludi Plebeii a key venue for Roman theatrical creation: Latin comedy was born in the context of the people’s festival.

A popular festival that became a state institution

By the 1st century BC, the Ludi Plebeii had been fully integrated into the official calendar. Cicero, referring to his duties as aedile, lists the sacred games he was to celebrate: those of Ceres, Liber and Libera, of Flora, and the oldest ones in honour of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva [8]. He no longer distinguished between the Plebeii and the Romani: both now belonged to the same religious tradition of the Republic.

What had begun as a political claim had become a state institution: the Ludi Plebeii were no longer merely the people’s festival, but the festival of a people recognised by the city.

Ante diem octavum Kalendas Decembres – Ante diem duodecimum Kalendas Januarias

Trois groupes, trois rituels

Tre gruppi, tre rituali

IN BRIEF – Born in Rome on November 24th under the name Bruma, the festival transformed in Constantinople into an extended festive cycle, the Brumalia. Farmers, vine-growers, and city dwellers honored their deities through nocturnal sacrifices. The most spectacular rite saw vine-growers jumping over inflated wineskins after immolating goats to Dionysus.

Brumalia: when Rome and Byzantium celebrated the shortest days

In the Roman calendar, the Brumalia constitute one of the least documented winter festivals of antiquity. Celebrated primarily in Constantinople and the eastern part of the Empire between the 6th and 10th centuries, these nocturnal festivities marked the darkest period of the year and reveal a social organization in which farmers, vine-growers, and city dwellers honored their protective deities according to distinct rituals.

A festival with variable geometry

The term Brumalia derives from the Latin bruma, which means « the shortest day » or « winter solstice, » itself a contraction of brevima, an archaic superlative form of brevis (« brief »). In Rome there existed a minor festival called Bruma, celebrated on November 24th (ante diem octavum Kalendas Decembres), a date attested by the calendars of Silvius and Philocalus in the 4th and 5th centuries. This limited Roman celebration transformed in Constantinople into an extended festive cycle, the Brumalia, which continued until the auxiphôtia, the « festival of the growing days, » that is, the moment when days begin to lengthen again after the winter solstice, around December 21-25.

The first literary mentions of the Brumalia appear in the 4th century, but our principal sources date from the 6th century. The Byzantine authors John Malalas and John the Lydian attributed the origin of these festivals to Romulus himself, legendary founder of Rome, in an apologetic rhetoric intended to counter the disapproval of the Christian Church. This etiology is now recognized as a late construction aimed at legitimizing threatened pagan practices. In reality, the Byzantine Brumalia resulted from the fusion of three distinct elements: the Roman Bruma of November 24th, the Saturnalia which began on December 17th, and the agrarian rites of Dionysus and Demeter celebrated during this period.

Three groups, three rituals

John the Lydian, an imperial functionary writing under Justinian in the 6th century, provides in his treatise On the Months the most detailed description of the practices linked to the Brumalia. He explains that « it was the custom among the Romans to divide their citizens into three and to distinguish those suited for arms, those for agriculture, those for hunting »¹. The winter season brought all these activities to an end « because of the cold of the season and the brevity of the day. » During this period of enforced rest, each social group honored its protective deities:

The farmers sacrificed pigs to Cronus (Saturn), god of time and agriculture, and to Demeter (Ceres), goddess of harvests. John the Lydian notes that this practice « has been maintained until today, » testifying to the permanence of the ritual slaughter of pigs in December, a custom that has endured through the centuries in many regions of Europe.

The vine-growers performed a more spectacular ritual in honor of Dionysus (Bacchus): « The vine-growers slaughtered goats in honor of Dionysus, because the goat is the enemy of the vine and for this reason it was sacrificed to Dionysus, and, after having removed their skin and filled these skins with air, they jumped over them »². This playful practice, known by the name of ascolia, evoked Dionysian vitality and the symbolic victory over the enemies of the vine. The rite strangely recalls the Athenian Lesser Dionysia, where jumping on inflated wineskins was also practiced.

The city dwellers and magistrates offered to the priests of the Mother (probably Cybele, the Magna Mater) the firstfruits of the harvests: wine, olive oil, wheat, honey, and « all the productions of trees that are kept and preserved. » They also made breads without water. John the Lydian specifies that « this custom has been maintained even now and, in November and December, until the festival of the growing days, these offerings are brought to the priests. »

Nights, infernal deities, and vows of longevity

The Brumalia possessed a fundamental chthonic character, linked to the infernal deities and the cycle of seeds buried in the earth. John the Lydian explains it thus: « They take place at night, because it is in darkness that Cronus is found, who was sent to Tartarus by Zeus. They thus refer to the wheat because it has been sown in the earth and is no longer visible »³. The grain disappeared beneath the earth symbolized this descent into the underworld before the spring rebirth. The author concludes that « the Brumalia are truly festivals of the infernal deities. »

During these winter nights, the Romans « greeted each other and addressed mutual vows, saying in the language of their fathers ‘vives annos’, that is ‘live for years' »⁴. These words of longevity resounded in the darkness of the darkest season, affirming life in the face of cold and night. The festivities also included banquets, wine libations, and an atmosphere of collective conviviality that contrasted with the austerity of winter.

A later practice, which appeared at the turn of the 5th and 6th centuries under the reign of Emperor Anastasius (491-518), consisted of organizing invitations according to the Greek alphabetical order: each of the twenty-four days of the festive period was assigned a letter, and one invited to one’s table people whose name began with that letter. John the Lydian specifies, however, that « the custom of greeting according to names at the time of the Brumalia is in reality something quite recent, » clearly distinguishing this late innovation from the more ancient ritual practices.

Resistance and disappearance

In the 6th century, Emperor Justinian was conducting an official repression of paganism throughout the Byzantine Empire. Despite this hostile policy, the Brumalia continued to be celebrated, although participants were ostracized by the Church. John the Lydian moreover reports that « since the Church dissuades from participating in them, they call them festivals of Cronus, » that is, Saturnalia, thus assimilating two distinct celebrations in order to better condemn them together.

Canon 62 of the Council in Trullo of 692 explicitly condemns certain Dionysian rites that persisted at that time. The Byzantine authors of the 12th century, Balsamon, Tzetzes, and Zonaras, confirm that the Brumalia were perceived as a festival of Dionysus, Broumos being considered an epithet of this god. Even in the 8th century, Emperor Constantine V Copronymus honored Dionysus and Broumos as creators of grain and wine during these festivities.

The last attestations of the Brumalia date from the 10th century. Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus mentions that his predecessors Constantine I, Theodosius I, Marcian, and Leo I celebrated the Brumalia, without however specifying the exact form the festival took under these reigns. The poet Christopher of Mytilene, in the 10th century, evokes in a poem cakes received « at the time of the Brumalia. » No source mentions the festival again after the sack of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade in 1204, an event that probably marked the definitive end of this millennial tradition.

The slaughter of pigs in December, the nocturnal festivities at year’s end, the exchange of vows, and the spirit of conviviality during the darkest period of the year constitute practices that survived the Brumalia themselves, integrated into Mediterranean popular customs and into Christian winter celebrations.
