Although we sometimes count on our fingers, it never gets us very far. At ten, we have exhausted our natural resources. Getting round the problem, the Greeks – and after them the Romans – used a system allowing them to count up to 99 on one hand, and thus up to 9999 on both. This obviously required a good memory and a certain manual dexterity.

The practice was so deeply embedded in everyday usage that no ancient author bothered to describe it systematically. We must wait until the eighth century. Around 725, when the Western Roman Empire had already been gone for more than two centuries, Bede the Venerable, a monk of Northumbria, meticulously recorded the method at the start of his treatise De temporum ratione. Included in a work devoted to the calculation of time and the date of Easter, the ancient numerical language of the fingers thus became an instrument of ecclesiastical computus.

Finger-reckoning gradually declined, but survived throughout the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance. Fibonacci still describes it in the Liber abaci, composed in 1202 and revised in 1228, and Luca Pacioli later gave it a famous printed depiction in 1494. Its use eventually died out, though the technique did not disappear from manuscripts and scholarly works.

In 2006, Gérard Minaud, a doctor of history then affiliated with the Université Paul-Cézanne in Aix-Marseille, renewed the study of the subject by systematically comparing it with Roman iconography. He published a detailed article entitled “Des doigts pour le dire”[1].

The researcher notes that the existence of finger-reckoning is confirmed in at least forty-eight Latin texts written between the 3rd century BCE and the 6th century CE[2]. But these authors allude to the practice merely as an illustration or an anecdote, without naming it. Only two authors, Quintilian and Apuleius, call it gestus computationis[3].

An even earlier trace is found in the Greek comic poet Aristophanes, who wrote the following in 422 BCE:

And first calculate simply, not with pebbles, but using your hand, the tribute owed to us from the total of the allied cities.[4]

If the use of this digital numeration technique “was so common and unexplained in the texts, it is because Roman readers certainly understood them without the slightest difficulty”, comments Gérard Minaud, who then compares Bede the Venerable’s explanations with ancient iconography.

A fine example is provided by the stele of the vegetable seller from Ostia. Behind his stall, the merchant holds out his right hand, with the ring finger and little finger folded onto the palm, which expresses the number eight. A price, presumably. For Bede, the right hand was used for hundreds and thousands, but his description is theoretical: “My hypothesis is that when the thousand mark has not been reached, a single hand – whether left or right – could indicate units and tens while retaining the same dactylological syntax”, the researcher observes.

The Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) holds a collection of tesserae (tokens) dating from the imperial Roman period. On one face, the number in Roman numerals; on the other, the way to represent it with the hand.

A few years after Gérard Minaud, two mathematician researchers, Jérôme Gavin and Alain Schärlig, devoted an entire book to ancient finger-reckoning[5], with the aim of uncovering hidden messages in ancient works of art by observing the position of the hands. Jérôme Gavin recounts that his curiosity was sparked tenfold during a visit to the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva with his son. Observing funerary niches from the 2nd century originating from Palmyra, he noticed that the hands of the figures depicted probably expressed coded numbers. Across the centuries, the statues speak a symbolic language, one that is inaudible today to most people. For every number, of course, carried a symbolic meaning in addition to its mathematical value. This meaning could naturally vary depending on place and period[6].

But why did finger-reckoning actually disappear? Gavin and Schärlig offer an explanation. In a Mediterranean world where different languages and writing systems coexisted, the manual representation of numbers allowed communication without speaking or writing. The gradual spread of Indo-Arabic numerals and written calculation, from the end of the Middle Ages onwards, would have progressively reduced the usefulness of this gestural language.
